The Andaman and nicobar Islands are a group of islands at the juncture of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman sea. The Union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is located at 6-14° N latitude and 92-94° E Longitude.

The area located to the north of 10°N latitude is called Andaman island while the area of the south of 10°N latitude is called Nicobar island.

Andaman nicobar is largest in area among union territories. The population of Andaman & Nicobar is 380581 (as per census 2011.)

Union Territories and Their Capitals 2023 List

Since January 26, 2020, India has had 8 union territories. You can find a list of these union territories, along with their capitals, in the India 2023 list here. The union territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli have been merged into a single territory. On August 5, the Indian government also revoked the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and divided it into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. With this merger, the number of union territories in India remains at eight. What are the difference between States and Union Territories of India.

In India, there are 28 States and 8 Union Territories. The main difference between a state and a union territory lies in their administration and the powers held by the central government and the state government.

The States Union Territories
  • States have their own elected governments with a chief minister as the head of the government and a governor as the representative of the President of India.
  • States have a high degree of autonomy and have control over most of the matters except for issues related to defense, foreign affairs, and telecommunications, which are under the purview of the central government.
  • The legislative assembly of a state makes laws for issues such as education, agriculture, and public order, among others.
  • The executive head is Governor
  • Union Territories are governed directly by the central government through an administrator appointed by the President of India.
  • The central government has complete control over the administration and lawmaking in Union Territories.
  • There are some Union Territories, such as Delhi and Puducherry, that have a legislature and an elected government, but the central government still has control over certain important subjects such as law and order.
